Scene Stealers: Pom Poms

You’d have to be living under a rock to have missed the pom pom and tassel trend out in force this summer. Everything from shorts, necklaces, clutches, blouses, earrings, shoes and swimsuits to accent pillows, throws, curtains, garlands, wall hangings and hammocks have shown off a fantastical pom pom, or twenty.

And the fun isn’t over! Fall & winter are gearing up to be just as swingy – but in a cozier, cooler weather sort of way. Think metallic, leather, and wool and fur.

What is it that makes these crazy trims so exciting? Poms are a great way to make a look more dynamic, be it clothing or home decor. Just look at the swing on that long gold bracelet!  They’re fun and whimsical, and they catch our attention because they bring movement to the style. Like the flick of a wrist in your peripheral vision, tassels and fringe are amazing scene stealers.

Poms don’t need to take over a room (or an outfit) to make their point. No matter the size, they take advantage of color and texture to catch your eye and introduce just enough quirkiness to make you remember them.

Need some style contrast? Tassels and poms can help. Different materials can take them from bohemian to modern, 18th century French to 1970’s glam, ethnic to preppy.

Needless to say, poms also have kid appeal. So when it comes to interiors, they add playful detail to a child’s room or playroom, but in lux materials they can also bridge easily to more grown-up spaces. As we see more and more families opting for less formal, more friendly decor, poms are a great way to make shared spaces more engaging to all ages.
